Schizophrenic Christians

Broadly speaking, church people fall into three different categories. The first category is the disassociated  multiple personality category. The second category is the schizophrenic category. And the third category is the fully integrated new identity category.

The people in the first category simply “play” church. These people have not surrendered their lives to Yeshua (Jesus), and agreed to die with Him, so they can be resurrected as a new creature “In Him“. Sadly, these people hold on to their lives and goals, and stubbornly  refuse to yield to the calls of the Holy Spirit to surrender and die.

The people in this first category are not playing the church game to lose, no they are playing the church game to win! These people come to church to win the approval of other people in their community, and, at the same time, earn some brownie points with Yahweh (God). For them, church is all about what Yah can do for them, and not what they can do for Him. These people seek recovery, health and wealth.

When these people are around “church people“, they become a “church person“, but when they are around “worldly people“, they become a “worldly person“.  They have multiple personalities.

The second category

The people in the second category have surrendered their lives to Yeshua, and agreed to die with Him, so they can be resurrected as a new creature “in Him“. These people turn away from their old lives and goals, and seek to live His life, and accomplish His goals. These people meet with other believers and serve them, and give to meet their needs. These people come to church to lose, they come to die.

Nevertheless, the people in this second category are Schizophrenic. The word, “schizophrenia” translates roughly as a splitting of the mind. Technically, however, it is not the same as having multiple personalities, it is more like not having a fully integrated mind that functions seamlessly. Schizophrenia is characterized by strong, coexisting unreconciled, inconsistent or contradictory cognitive elements. These deep cognitive conflicts, which are very troubling, can cause the mind to construct clever coping mechanisms to minimize the pain: And this is very detrimental to the person.

The coping mechanisms that the mind builds, when it is under a great deal of internally generated stress, fly under the radar of consciousness. The mind builds them, and  the person is not aware of them, i.e., they are built on a subconscious level. Consequently, the symptoms that the coping mechanisms produce, which rise to the conscious level, such as, fear, confusion, anxiety, depression, (or in extreme cases), hearing voices, or seeing things, seem inexplicable.

Moreover, and perhaps more troubling, is that these deep internal cognitive schisms, and the coping mechanisms that they produce, can also create desires for people, things and activities, and lead to strong sin patterns, which are extremely hard to break free from.

Deep internal cognitive schisms

What on earth could cause such a deep internal cognitive schism, which, if left unresolved could build these destructive subconscious coping mechanisms and create all this havoc in our lives?

Well, when a person loves Yeshua with all of his or her heart, and seeks, daily, to die with Him, so that they can live a resurrected life “in Him” and accomplish His goals, here on the earth, there is nothing more troubling, painful, and perplexing than sin.

I mean, everything was great for a week or two, you were walking hand-in-hand with the Creator of the universe, through the blood of the Messiah, walking out the Word, as the Holy Spirit directed you. You sensed the reality of being one with Yahweh, seated at His right hand, in the heavenly realm, far above all powers and principalities. You were almost in a state of spiritual ecstasy, thinking that, at perhaps any moment, Yah would rapture you away as He did Enoch!

Then, it happened. Just like it had a thousand times before. A desire arose from within, and rather than capturing the thoughts that it produced, and forcing them to bow to Christ in you, you granted the thoughts entry into your mental sphere, and foolishly entertained the possibility of enjoying the “reward” that they offered, and slowly nursed it with your attention, and allowed it to overpower you!

The next thing you know, you are indulging in sin. You are enjoying the reward that you get from gossip, greed, ego, division, lust, anger, gluttony, or whatever it is that you struggle with. And just like that, you fall from heaven, and land squarely in a miry pit. In a blink of an eye, your beautiful heavenly white robe is soiled with blood and filth.

Now you have to suffer a beat-down by your conscience, and the Devil piles on and reminds you of how many times you have failed. Then, after you have been punished enough, and a few days have past, you find the courage to approach  Yah, and beg for forgiveness. Then, after you successfully avoid all sin for a few days, you feel like everything is ok between you and God. Then, you slowly resume your ministry work, but you are not quite as bold as you need to be. Then, after a few weeks you are flying with the Holy angels again!

This is an exhaustive cycle to be stuck in, and every time you go through it, you lose a little zeal for life and the ministry. And, in this cycle, you run the risk of developing depression, anxiety and other side effects that steal your joy, and bring death into your life.

It doesn’t take but a moment to go from flying with the Holy angels of God, to wallowing in the miry pit with the rest of the human pigs. And if you do not have the cognitive tools to reconcile these two different realities that we fluctuate between, you will find yourself in the second category with the rest of the schizophrenic christians.

Take it from me, I have spent most of my life in this spiritual desert, and it is no where to be, it will drain you, distract you, and discourage you. But praise Yah, I have crossed over! I have left the desert, and entered into the Promise Land to find rest! And you can too!

The third category

The third category of church people are the fully integrated new identity folks. These people have crossed over from the spiritual desert into the promise land to obtain rest.

How do you cross over? Well, In Hebrews 4, the Scriptures tell us that the children of Israel did not cross over because of unbelief. They were in the church of Moses, and were baptized in the Red Sea, and Christ was with them supplying all of their needs, but they didn’t cross over because they didn’t believe what He said about them.

The Lord told these people that they could cross over and defeat the giants, but they looked at themselves, in the flesh, and said that they were grasshoppers compared to the giants. These people looked at, who they were in the flesh, and let that outweigh, who God said they were “in Him” (that is, who they were through His empowerment).

In 1st Corinthians 10, the Lord tells us that these events were recorded in the Scriptures so that we could learn from them.

The lesson to learn

Here is the lesson that we need to learn from the Scriptures. When we sin, we can see ourselves in the flesh, and see a disgusting human pig wallowing in the mire of life, or we can see ourselves through Yahweh’s eyes, and see someone, who is holy and righteous.

Here is the deal. As long as we are in the flesh, we will sin.

Nevertheless, Yah says that He is not counting our sins against us. (Romans 4:8) Yah says that where our sins abound, His grace does super abound!(Romans 5:20) Yah says that Yeshua became sin so we could become the righteousness of God “In Him“. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Yah says that when we believe, He seals us with His Spirit and takes eternal possession of us! (Ephesians 1:13-14) Yah says that Yeshua obtained eternal redemption for us! (Hebrews 9:12)

Yahweh says that He loved us when we were yet sinners, and He sent Yeshua to die for us. (Romans 5:8) Yahweh also says that if an ungodly person will believe on Him, He will count their belief as righteousness. (Romans 4:5) How much more does Yahweh love us now that we are His children, and not ungodly sinners?

We must believe the Scriptures in order to reconcile our two conflicting realities, and enter the promise land to obtain rest.

According to the Scriptures, our legal status doesn’t change when we sin. Sin doesn’t change our relationship to Yahweh. Yahweh sees us through the mercy seat, and the mercy seat is covered in the blood of Yeshua. Yeshua’s blood takes away all of our sins, continually. Yeshua is praying for us, continually.

When Yahweh looks at you, He sees someone, who is  righteous and holy. And that will never change, no matter how much you sin.

My friend, Yeshua’s blood is far greater than your sin!

So, when you sin, confess your sin to get it off your conscience, and understand that God still sees you as righteous and holy. And do not allow your conscience, or the Devil to beat you up.

What then? Shall we continue in sin, so that grace will abound in order to swallow up our sin? God forbid! Sin has earthly consequences that are very unpleasant, and very destructive.

This is a hard lesson to learn, and accept. It seems counterintuitive, but adopting this attitude towards yourself and sin, actually frees you from sin by opening a channel for grace to flow into your life.

As always, it is your choice: You can believe the Scriptures, and enter the promise land to obtain rest, or you can stumble around in the desert for the rest of your life with the schizophrenic christians.

Kiss the Frog (Part 2)

The Way Out

Is there a way out of addiction? Yes! Sanctification is the way out. The word “sanctification” means to be set apart, or to be made holy. So, what do we need to be set apart from? (1.) Our spirit needs to be set apart from the Devil’s kingdom. (2.) Our soul (our thoughts, imaginations and emotions) needs to be set apart from Satan’s kingdom. (3.) Our behavior needs to be set apart from Satan’s kingdom.

How can we set our spirit apart from Satan’s kingdom? Our spirit is not able to overpower Satan, and he is not willing to release us from his spiritual kingdom. There is nothing that we can do; our spirit is trapped in Satan’s spiritual kingdom.

Thankfully, Yahweh sent His Son Yeshua to rescue us from Satan’s spiritual kingdom and place us in His Spiritual Kingdom! (save us!) When we hear the Gospel, which is the Good News that Yeshua shed His blood to ransom us out of Satan’s kingdom, and we bow to Him as Lord, His Spirit indwells us. As Yeshua’s Spirit indwells us, He removes our spirit from Satan’s spiritual kingdom, and places us in His Spiritual Kingdom, by establishing it in us.

Through the agency of the indwelling Holy Spirit, Yahweh gives us power so that we can stop our soul and body from acting like Satan. The Holy Spirit leads us and guides us in order to sanctify our soul and body. The Holy Spirit produces the fruit of His character in our lives to sanctify our soul and body. The Holy Spirit gives us understanding of His Word to sanctify our soul and body. The Holy Spirit gives gifts to people through us in order to build their faith and sanctify their spirit, soul and body. And in the process of giving these gifts to other people, our faith is built up so that we can sanctify our soul and body.

So here’s the bottom line. The process of sanctification begins in the spirit realm. More specifically, the process of sanctification begins when we bow to Yeshua, and His blood ransoms our spirit out of Satan’s spiritual kingdom, and His Spirit establishes Yahweh’s Spiritual Kingdom in us! This is where recovery begins.

Choose Your Path

The Scriptures say that Yahweh sanctifies our spirit via the Cross, and the Blood. Then, Yahweh connects our sanctified spirit to His Spirit and Word, which supply the power and direction that we need in order to sanctify our soul and body.

As we study and meditate on Yahweh’s Word, we change the way we think. We begin to think more like Yahweh, and less like Satan. We use our new reasoning abilities to cast down every argument, imagination, and emotion that does not line up with Yahweh’s Word. We also yield to the Holy Spirit, and let Him lead us.

Paul called this process the re-newing of the mind. Paul said that a believer was transformed by the re-newing of his mind. When Yahweh regenerated our spirit, and delivered it from Satan’s kingdom, that was an ontological transformation. When we cooperate with the Spirit and the Word, and allow them to re-new our mind, that is an experiential transformation. This sets our soul apart from Satan’s kingdom. Then, our soul has a new agenda that sets our body apart from Satan’s kingdom. In other words, our renewed soul changes our bodily behavior.

Yahweh’s recovery plan is spiritual sanctification that works itself out in our lives as we re-new our minds. It should not surprise us to learn that the Counterfeiter has put together a recovery plan that is also based on spiritual sanctification.

Essentially, A.A. says we can practice a set of spiritual (moral/ethical) principles, in all our affairs, and sanctify ourselves. The first three Steps, and their underlying spiritual principles, mimic the work of the Cross and the Blood of Yeshua. The first three Steps position a person to receive power and direction from a Power greater than himself (presumably his Creator), so he can work the remaining steps.

It is not possible, however, for a person to connect with Yahweh without going through His Son’s bloodstained Cross. Thus, Yahweh does not remove the person, who works the first three Steps from Satan’s spiritual kingdom, and put him in His Spiritual Kingdom. Hence, the person is not sanctified spiritually.

Since the first three Steps do not remove a person from Satan’s spiritual kingdom, and place him in Yahweh’s Spiritual Kingdom, he does not have fellowship with Yahweh. This person thinks that he is walking hand-in-hand with his Creator, but since he has rejected Yahweh’s revelation, The Master Deceiver is deceiving him.

Spiritual principles are attitudes and actions that nourish our immaterial part (spirit). Spiritual principles are closely related to moral and ethical principles. “Moral” refers to “right behavior”. “Ethical” refers to “a standard” of right behavior.

Hence, when we live by spiritual/moral/ethical principles, our conscience does not condemn us, and we don’t feel the guilt and shame that come from thinking and living wrong. The Deceiver knows that when our conscience is quiet, it is easy for him to deceive us into believing that we are right with our Creator.

Since moral behaviors and ethical standards are tied to religious doctrines, A.A. uses the term, “spiritual” principles. As the story goes, spiritual principles do not come from religious doctrines, they come from the nature of the universe. And there are attitudes and actions that bring us into unity with “God,” others and our true-self, and there are attitudes and actions that separate us from “God,” others and our true-self. Supposedly, dysfunction (addiction) is the result of violating life’s spiritual principles, and the solution to dysfunction (addiction) is adhering to them.

This is one version of A.A.’s spiritual (moral/ethical) principles.

Step 1: Honesty
Step 2: Faith
Step 3: Surrender
Step 4: Soul Searching
Step 5: Integrity
Step 6: Acceptance
Step 7: Humility
Step 8: Willingness
Step 9: Forgiveness
Step 10: Maintenance
Step 11: Making Contact
Step 12: Service

Practicing A.A.’s 12 spiritual principles, in all your affairs, will change the way you think, which will change the way you act. So, practicing A.A.’s spiritual principles will sanctify your soul and body…but they will not sanctify your soul or body, unto Yahweh. Practicing these spiritual principles may mimic Yahweh’s sanctification by correcting a dysfunction in your life, but they will not make you right with Him. Practicing these spiritual principles may even lead to spiritual experiences that make you aware of the spirit realm, but they will not awaken you to Yahweh.

The objectives of Yahweh’s plan, and the objectives of Satan’s plan are identical. The mechanisms that bring about the objectives in Yahweh’s plan are identical to the mechanisms that bring about the objectives in Satan’s plan. However, the power source that drives the mechanisms in Yahweh’s plan is the polar opposite of the power source that drives the mechanisms in Satan’s plan. This is the problem.

Since the objectives and mechanisms of Satan’s recovery plan are identical to the objectives and mechanisms of Yahweh’s recovery plan, some people think the recovery plans are identical. They are not! The power and information source that drives the mechanisms in the two plans are very different. Why does this matter? It matters because power and information come from relationship, and there is only one way to establish a relationship with Yahweh! You must go to the Cross!

Some people say that we don’t have to travel down the “Roman Road” in order to submit to Yahweh. These people say that they can submit to Yahweh by working the 3rd Step (surrendering their will and life to a God of their own understanding.) These people are denying Yahweh’s revelation, and His Son’s finished work on the Cross. These people are preaching “another Gospel”. And when they preach Jesus in this other Gospel, they are preaching “another Jesus”. Run from these people!

These people say that the only thing that differs between Yahweh’s recovery plan and A.A.’s recovery plan is terminology. These people say that they can use the terminology that they want to use to submit to God, and you can use the terminology that you want to use to submit to God. The only thing that is really important is that we submit to God, and we all do that differently. This is wrong! If you do not submit to God, the way He said to submit to Him (through His Son’s bloodstained Cross), then you will submit to someone other than God.

Some things Never Change

In the beginning, the wise old Serpent promised that we could be like Yahweh by knowing right and wrong. That is, the crafty Serpent said that we did not have to submit to Yahweh’s revelation, and promised that we could create a more pleasing reality by practicing a set of moral/ethical/spiritual principles. The Serpent lied.

The Serpent has not changed his tactics. Through A.A., the Serpent says that we do not have to submit to Yahweh’s revelation, and promises that we can recover by practicing a set of moral/ethical/ spiritual principles. The Serpent is still lying.

The lies of the Serpent are subtle. The Serpent counterfeits the works of Yahweh. This is why the counterfeit recovery program just sounds like a less threatening, or a modernized politically-correct version of Yahweh’s recovery plan. It is not!

The counterfeit recovery program is carefully crafted. It uses some of the terms and concepts that are in Yahweh’s plan. The Serpent knew that if his plan looked very different from Yahweh’s, he would have a hard time getting you to accept it.

For the sake of contrast, let’s say that the Serpent’s plan instructed you to kiss a frog, so that it would turn into a savior, who would deliver you from addiction. In this outlandish hypothetical scenario, you would probably realize, very quickly, that Yahweh’s plan was a viable plan, and the Serpent’s plan was a fairy tale.

This is exactly why the Serpent made his recovery plan look like Yahweh’s. And to sweeten the mixture, the Serpent used earthy concepts that appeal to the natural mind. Then, the Serpent put the icing on the cake, by eliminating the specificity that Yahweh built into His recovery plan, in order to make it all-inclusive.

The Serpent’s frosted cake appeals to fallen people with natural minds. The sad thing is that the Serpent’s sweet-cake does not impart any of the spiritual blessings that Yahweh’s Heavenly Manna does. And the saddest thing of all is that after a person eats the Serpent’s sweet-cake, he views Yahweh’s plan as a fairy tale.

In Yahweh’s recovery plan, He sanctifies our spirit, soul and body. Yahweh recreates us as a new creature, and gives us new desires that please Him.

In Satan’s recovery plan, we attempt to sanctify our spirit, soul and body. We do the religious things that A.A. prescribes in order to subdue our fallen nature, and change our desires.

It is our choice.

We can work Yahweh’s recovery plan; or, we can kiss the frog.

Passover is not a Jewish holiday

About 3,500 years ago, Egypt ruled over Jacob’s children (The Hebrews, Yahweh’s elect). Pharaoh lorded over Jacob’s children, and forced them to build his kingdom. The only recompense that Jacob’s children received was pain, misery and death.

Jacob’s children had been in bondage for 400 years. These Hebrews knew that Yahweh had promised to prosper them and make them into a great nation, but they doubted His promises, and turned their backs on Him to worship the gods of Egypt.

Then, suddenly, Moses appeared with a message of salvation. Salvation did not come in the form they anticipated, however. Moses said that Yahweh had condemned every first born person and animal, in the land of Egypt, to death. In Egypt, the first born inherited a double portion and became the family priest. So the first born represented all the people of Egypt, their relationship with God, and their future.

This was not good news for the Egyptians, or the Hebrews. Afterwards, Moses told the Hebrews that if they would take the blood of a lamb and put it on their doors, Yahweh would spare their first born. In other words, Yahweh would restore His realtionship with them and give them a future they could look forward to–He would fulfill His promises to Abraham by prospering them and making them into a nation.

When the death angel passed through Egypt, Yahweh covered the doors that were marked with blood so that he could not kill the first born in those homes. The Hebrews who placed their faith in the blood of the Passover lamb were saved. Then, the Hebrews followed Moses through the Red Sea and were baptized into a new life.

After that, Yah took the Hebrews, who He had already redeemed by grace through faith, to Mt. Sinai. At Mt. Sinai. Yahweh instructed His people and told them what sin was, and what righteousness looked like. Yah also gave His people away that they could be restored when they missed the mark of righteousness (when they sinned).

This was nice, if you were a Hebrew, but what about the non-Hebrews in Egypt? Were the non-Hebrews (the Gentiles), in Egypt, just out of luck and condemned to die? Were they condemned and separated from Yah without a hope or a future?

No! The gentiles, who put their faith in the blood of a Passover lamb, received the exact same grace as the Hebrews did. This is why the Scriptures say that a mixed multitude came out of Egypt with Moses. This multitude of Hebrews and Gentiles passed through the Red Sea with Moses, and were baptized into a new life. This multitude of Hebrews and Gentiles stood at the foot of Mt. Sina and received Yahweh’s instructions and the legal code that came with them. This legal code defined sin and made it consequential, and provided a way for the mixed multitude to be cleansed of their sins so that they could enjoy their relationship with Yahweh.

In Exodus 12:48-49, Yahweh says, “And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.”

Notice that Yahweh said that a stranger (someone who was not born in Israel as a child of Abraham, that is, a person who was born in another nation as a child of someone other than Abraham, a gentile) wanted to enter into a relationship with Him and eat the meal of fellowship with Him, they had to be circumcised. After this gentile was circumcised, Yahweh treated him like he had been born in Israel as a child of Abraham. Yahweh said that His instructions and law applied to this gentile.

Therefore, Israel was not an ethnic group (a group of Hebrews); Israel was a Hebrew core with people from many other nations attached to it; Israel was Yahweh’s people.

Passover was a point of entry into Israel for the people of the nations (the gentiles). Gentiles put their faith in Yah’s promises and demonstrated their faith by submitting to circumcision, so they could fellowship with Him and partake of His many blessings.

Yahweh commanded His people, the children of Israel (a Hebrew core with people from every nation attached to it), to keep the Passover every year, forever.

The New Testament says that Yahweh has condemned everyone in the world. However, we can mark our hearts with the blood of the Passover Lamb to escape this condemnation. Yeshua is Yahweh’s Passover Lamb. When we put our faith in Yah’s promises and bow our knee to Yeshua, His Spirit comes to live in our heart to circumcise it. Then, we can eat the Passover. The communion meal is a short version of the Passover meal, where we examine ourselves to remove all the leaven from our hearts, and eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Passover Lamb, by faith.

Today, just as in times past, gentiles enter the Israel of Yahweh through Passover. When Gentiles partake of the Passover Lamb, that is, when they bow their knee to Yeshua, they become children of Abraham and fellow citizens with the Hebrews in the Commonwealth of Israel. Yahweh’s instructions to Israel apply to us.

Yahweh’s instructions to the children of Israel (to His people, Hebrews and Gentiles) is to remember His death until He returns. How should we remember Yeshua’s death until He returns to the earth to rule over the nations for 1,000 years?

Well, Yeshua celebrated Passover. Paul celebrated Passover. Paul told us to keep Passover. Paul told us to follow him as he followed Yeshua. John said that if we are Yeshua’s disciples, then we should walk as He walked. Christians kept Passover up until the 4th Century, when the Catholic Church replaced Passover with Easter.

My wife and I have celebrated Passover for the last 7 years. Each year, at the appointed time, we assemble with our gentile and Hebrew brothers and sisters to remember Yeshua’s death on the stake. We look forward to it all year. Tomorrow, we will celebrate Passover with a meal and worship service, and you can too.

Why keep a short 5 miniute version of Passover, when you can enjoy a feast and really celebrate your deliverance from Egypt (the world) and Pharaoh (Satan)? Do you remember when Pharaoh held you in slavery through sin and forced you to build his kingdom and paid you the wages of pain, misery and death? Do you remember when your partook of the Passover Lamb and got free to serve Yahweh? Celebrate your deliverance by keeping the Passover with your gentile and Hebrew brothers.

Embrace the One New Man (the Hebrew/Gentile Body of Messiah) by keeping the Passover. It will make your deliverance more real and transform your life.

Passover is not a Jewish holiday; Passover is a holy day for Yahweh’s people.
